    Trailer for In Bloom (2013)

Nana Ekvtimishvili

The debut feature of Georgia’s Nana Ekvtimishvili In Bloom, co-directed with Germany’s Simon Gross, is based on her own memories and shows the turbulence of Tbilisi in an early 1990s of fragile independence through the lens of two teenage girls. It’s a world in which violence exists close in with acts of tenderness, and a gun given as protection is considered a token of affection. This finely crafted film about the struggle for identity against a wider backdrop of intense unpredictability won the Heart of Sarajevo at Bosnia’s 2013 festival, and strengthens the sense that Georgia could be the new Romania for an emerging cinematic talent wave.
