Kádár

For a taste of home-style Hungarian Jewish cooking (although not kosher), Kádár on the edge of Klauzal tér is a local favourite. This is not a place for dinner though, since “Uncle Kádár”, the nickname lovingly bestowed on it by locals, only opens its doors for lunch. It’s easy to walk straight by the small door sandwiched between the flaking plaster and exposed brickwork without noticing the little eatery hidden inside. The wood-panelled walls and black-and-red checked tablecloths give it that classic retro feel, accentuated by antiquated soda water bottles and photos of Hungarian celebrities. The food here is good, hearty Hungarian-Jewish fare. You’ll find plenty of boiled beef, cholent topped with goose meat and some classic Hungarian dishes like paprika chicken.
