MSQRD, or Masquerade, is one of the better-known apps from the new East – in 2016 it was acquired by Facebook after 3 months since the app's launch, fast becoming an inspirational success-story for ambitious entrepreneurs from the region. The app uses face recognition technologies to produce masks and face-swap images and videos – similar to the 'Lens' feature on Snapchat. Shortly before the Facebook acquisition, MSQRD made headlines with one of its filters which turned user's faces into Stalin – the filter was later removed. New features include live broadcast in masks through the Facebook Live tool.
