Exhibition explores nature of reality in hypperreal world

Given the abundance of digital media images in the world today how can we be sure what’s real? This is the question that artists George and Ilya Pusenkoff hope to answer in their their first joint show, After Reality, at the Moscow Museum of Modern Art (MMOMA).

The show explores the relativity of reality through paintings and interactive installations from the past two years and is a result of discussions on the nature of reality that have taken place between the father and son duo. Through stills and moving image, and using the format of the abstract grid popularised by artists such as Piet Mondrian, the exhibition positions itself at the border between fiction and real life, often through artistic manipulation. The father-and-son dialogue is extended to the viewer whose movements are reflected in the grid-like artworks.

Veteran artist George Pusenkoff has been experimenting with the visual language of digital culture since the Nineties. His work forms part of many permanent collections in galleries such as the Museum Ludwig in Cologne, the Museo La Biennale di Venezia in Venice and the Art Collection Rockefeller University in New York. His son Ilya studied film, photography and art in Cologne and is known for his emotionally intense video works. Both live and work in Cologne. The exhibition at the MMOMA runs from 9 October to 10 November.
