The Russian Art Pavilion in New York opens for the second time this weekend to coincide with the Frieze Art Fair also taking place in the city. Based at Erarta Galleries on Madison Avenue, the pavilion showcases groundbreaking art from emerging and established artists from Russia, Eastern Europe and the Baltics.

The event features paintings, sculpture, video installations and performances from 27 artists, including prolific Russian sculptor Ernst Neizvestny, denounced by USSR leader Nikita Khrushchev as a “degenerate artist”, and multimedia artist Yuliya Lanina, known for her animatronic sculptures portraying radical alternate realities.

This year’s Frieze Art Fair will also feature Pussy Riot’s Nadya Tolokonnikova and Masha Alekhina, who will speak to editor of The New Yorker David Remnick about their involvement in the feminist art collective and their recently launched Zona Prava, an NGO advocating prison reform.

The Russian Pavilion NY 2014 will take place from 4 to 18 May.
