Russian photographer wins $10,000 Getty Images and Instagram grant

Dmitry Markov is among three photographers to win a US$10,000 grant from Getty Images and Instagram for their work documenting underrepresented communities.

Markov, who hails from Pskov, a Russian city around 30 kilometres from the Estonian border, focuses his work on showing the reality of life in his hometown.

The Getty Images Instagram grant, which is the first of its kind, is a partnership between Getty Images and Instagram that aims to enable photographers to document places little known to the rest of the world.

“This grant will give me an opportunity to tell more stories and expand the geography of my project,” Markov said in an interview with TIME magazine.

The other recipients of the grant are Ismail Ferdous of Bangladesh and Adriana Zehbrauska of Brazil, who currently works in Mexico.

“Our three recipients could not better exemplify the original aim of this grant: to document and share stories of underrepresented communities that otherwise rarely come into focus,” Getty Images’s Senior Director of Content Partnerships Elodie Maillet Storm stated in a press release.

The three winners were selected from over 1,200 entries from 109 countries.In addition to the $10,000 grant, each will receive a one-year mentorship with an award-winning photojournalist from Getty Images. The winning photos will be on display at Photoville, the largest annual photographic event in New York, which runs until 20 September.
