Damaged love story sculpture restored in Batumi

The Ali and Nino sculpture, which was badly damaged in August, has been restored and is once again on display to the public in the Georgian city of Batumi.

Also known as Man and Woman, the sculpture was damaged in August when the male figure was dropped during an attempt to relocate the monument. The damaged figure has now been fully restored and the sculpture has been moved 50 metres from its original location on the seafront to the area next to Batumi’s ferris wheel.

Designed by Georgian architect and sculptor Tamara Kvesitadze, the sculpture incorporates two seven-metre-high steel figures of a man and a woman, which move towards each other and merge together every 10 minutes.

The moving sculpture was installed in Batumi in 2011, based on a novel of the same name by an Azerbaijani writer with the pen name Kurban Said, which tells the love story of a Muslim Azerbaijani boy and Christian Georgian girl in Baku from 1918 to 1920. The filming of a feature-length film based on Ali and Nino began earlier this year.
