Pop-up cinema proposed for new Russian space station

Film producer Oleg Teterin has requested permission from the Russian space agency Roscosmos to build a pop-up cinema in the Vostochny Cosmodrome spaceport, currently under construction in Russia’s Far East.

Teterin is a successful producer in Russia and Hollywood and heads the company Teterin Film, which recently announced plans for a series of pop-up cinemas for small towns, to be housed in shipping containers. Now, he has written to the head of Roscosmos, Aleksandr Ivanov to propose that the Vostochny station feature one of these low-budget, five-screen theatres.

In his letter to Ivanov, obtained by Russian newspaper Izvestia, Teterin claims that the proposed cinema would help to keep cosmonauts and technical staff entertained between missions, as well as fostering a healthy patriotism among workers. Teterin has previously stated that his shipping container cinemas will prioritise domestic films and serve “national drinks and snacks” – with the quintessentially Russian bread-based brew kvas to replace Coca-Cola, for instance.

The Vostochny Cosmodrome is currently under construction near the city of Uglegorsk in Russia’s eastern Amur region and is scheduled to open in 2018. Teterin’s first pop-up cinema is set to open soon in Lyudinovo, a city in the Kaluga region south-west of Moscow, with a plans for 99 further theatres over the next year.
