Russia to boost funding for children’s films

Russia is looking to increase funding for children’s and animated films, according to Minister of Culture Vladimir Medinsky.

Speaking at the Radiant Angel children’s film festival in Moscow, Mr Medinsky stated that in 2016 funding for children’s films is likely to exceed the current limit of 25 percent of the total public spending on cinema.

“We will support children’s film and animated movies. Since last year we have had a fixed quota of 25 percent of the total amount of state support earmarked for children’s films. We are considering increasing this amount from next year,” Mr Medinsky said.

This development comes after the Ministry of Culture increased funding for children’s films this year, allocating the same level of spending (nearly $1 million in non-refundable state subsidies) as for “patriotic” films.

2016 has been named “The Year of Cinema” in Russia, with extra financing to be allocated to the film sector from the state budget.
