Moscow to get Solzhenitsyn centenary memorial

A monument to mark the 100th anniversary of the birth of Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn (1918 – 2008), the Russian writer and historian, will be built in Moscow.

2018 will see more than 80 events taking place in honour of the anniversary in Russia, including the opening of the monument and a memorial museum and apartment dedicated to Solzhenitsyn, as well as exhibitions, festivals and other cultural and educational activities. In addition, Solzhenitsyn’s book The Gulag Archipelago will be republished with academic commentary.

“The plan includes 80 activities aimed at the study and and popularisation of the work of Alexander Solzhenitsyn and introducing his work to young people. Almost half of the events will be held in Moscow and the northern capital, St Petersburg,” said Head of Government Staff Sergei Prikhodko.

Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn was a Russian novelist and historian and an outspoken critic of the Soviet Union. His best known works include One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich (1962) and The Gulag Archipelago (1973). He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1970.
