Loznitsa at work on new WG Sebald-inspired documentary

Acclaimed Ukrainian film director Sergei Loznitsa revealed details of his upcoming projects last week at the International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR).

Loznitsa has been shooting at several former concentration camps for his new documentary Austerlitz, inspired by WG Sebald’s book of the same name. This will look at museums in former camps, while a new feature film will trace the events of September 1941 when, over three days, the Nazis killed 33,000 Jews in Kiev. These Second World War-themed projects build on his 2012 film In The Fog, which competed for the Palme d’Or at Cannes and is set in Belarus in 1942.

“It is an unusual structure. I show this event - I collect [the pieces of] the puzzle,” the director said, referring to the film’s lack of main protagonists.

In addition, the Ukrainian director will release a new dramatic feature, A Gentle Creature, which is set to shoot in Latvia. Inspired by the Dostoevsky novel of the same name, the film will tell the story of a woman in desperate search of news of her imprisoned husband. It has previously been reported that ARTE, Slot Machine and Looks Film & TV will support the project’s production.
