Hungary tower transformed to provide shelter for hikers

18 February 2016

A tower situated on the 1100km National Blue Trail in northern Hungary has been renovated to create a spectacular resting place for hikers.

The project, entitled “Galyatető lookout tower”, after the tower’s location on the country’s third highest peak, serves to provide a vantage point and refuge for walkers along the trail route.

The tower’s renovations have been designed by Budapest studio Nartarchitects. The architects have made a feature of the existing exposed concrete together with significant structural reconstructions, including a new woven stainless steel mesh on the external plane of the encircling staircase, as well as aesthetic features such as new colourful circular windows, to create three separate shelter areas within the tower.
