Success for new east photographers in World Press Photo Contest

A number of new east photographers have been featured among the winners and finalists of the 2016 World Press Photo Contest.

Of particular note are Sergey Ponomarev of Russia, who has been awarded first place in the News (Stories) category for his photo series Reporting Europe’s Refugee Crisis, and Slovenian photographer Matic Zorman, whose image Waiting to Register won first place in the People (Singles) category. Also among the winners was Vladimir Pesnya from Russia, who took home first prize in the Sports (Stories) category for his series Vetluga’s Hockey.

Another new east photographer to win an award was Matjaz Krivic of Slovenia, whose photo Digging the Future was awarded second prize in the People (Singles) category.

The winners and finalists were selected from 82,951 photos taken by 5,775 photographers from 128 different countries.
