The Fifth Moscow International Biennale for Young Art has announced the participants in its Main Project Deep Inside, as well as the curators for two Strategic Projects.

Curated by independent British contemporary art expert Nadim Samman, Deep Inside will showcase 87 works by young artists from 36 countries at the Trekhgornaya Manufaktura, one of Moscow’s oldest textile mills.

“The open call received an overwhelming response [...]. More than 2,000 applications from more than 80 countries were submitted, and the quality of the proposals made choosing the final selection a difficult but eye-opening process. Ranging from installation to video, interdisciplinary collaborations, painting and more, the scope of artistic approaches was huge,” Samman stated.

In speaking on the artistic response to the Main Project’s theme, Samman affirmed that “it is perhaps to be expected that artists should be fascinated by opacities, by occultations, encryptions and conspiracies [...]. Also, that they should rhapsodise about instability and polydimensionality. Deep Inside is a view from the chasm”.

In addition, two Strategic Projects will see Portuguese curator João Laia present the exhibition H Y P E R C O N N E C T E D, which will take place at the Moscow Museum of Modern Art, and Silvia Franceschini and Valeria Mancinelli of Italy showcase their project Time of Reasonable Doubts at the National Centre for Contemporary Art.

The Fifth Moscow International Biennale for Young Art will take place from 1 July — 10 August. The Biennale is commissioned by Ekaterina Kibovskaya. The full list of selected artists can be downloaded here.
