The Moscow metro is introducing genre rules for musicians, with buskers now prohibited from playing hard rock.

“If we have hard rock playing in the metro many people will complain about it. [...] the aim of our project is to make the metro comfortable for the maximum number of passengers possible,” said the head of development for Moscow’s Department of Transport and Road Infrastructure Development, adding that specific instruments will not face a ban.

On 1 March the Department of Transport together with the Moscow metro launched a new competition, “Music in the metro”, giving talented musicians the chance to perform in their own designated spots within the metro system.
