The Latvian State Language Centre (VVC), the language regulator of the Latvian language, launched a new initiative on Monday to improve language standards across the country’s press.

The project will see VVC engaging in a campaign “to determine, assess and reward the periodical press, which uses high-quality Latvian language, as well as to provide reasonable recommendations for improving its quality” over a six-month period.

VCC’s partners on the project include the Justice Ministry, Culture Ministry and the Latvian Association of Journalists.

While taking part in the initiative is voluntary, Justice Minister Dzintars Rasnačs emphasised that being known to use high-quality language is likely to serve the interests of media publications.

Prizes for best language usage are set to be awarded in October.
