The “Intermuseum” international museum festival opens tomorrow at the Moscow Manege, bringing together representatives from over 300 museums worldwide.

This year, the 16th edition of the festival, will centre on the themes “Social Mission of the Museum in the Context of Intercultural Dialogue” and “Museum without Borders”.

The more than 150 events planned to take place during the course of the festival aim to highlight the role of the museum as an important instrument of social inclusion and cohesion. In particular, the festival will feature a round table discussion focusing on the role of Russian museums in the restoration of monuments in the Syrian city of Palmyra. This event takes on particular significance given the recent concert by St Petersburg’s Mariinsky Theatre orchestra in Palmyra.

Intermuseum 2016 will see the participation of museums from China and Iran for the first time.

“If over the years the partners have participated as speakers, leading round tables and workshops, now foreign museums have their stands and are participating on the same level as Russian museums. Therefore, we can say that there is strong interest in the festival. This is the only festival of its kind in the world,” said deputy chairman of the festival’s organising committee, Mikhail Bryzgalov.

The 2016 Intermuseum festival will take place from 13 — 16 May at the Moscow Manege. More information can be found here (in Russian).
