Russian Culture Ministry publishes list of priority film subjects
Still from Leviathan (2014, dir. Andrey Zvyagintsev)

The Russian Ministry of Culture has published a list of topics that will have priority for state film funding.

Government funding will support films that reflect the “heroes of modern society in the fight against crime, terrorism and extremism”. In addition, films that demonstrate an “incentive for the self-fulfillment of today’s youth, in collaboration with the older generation and traditional values” and that focus on the “continuity of generations, moral and historical values” will be given priority.

This development raises questions regarding the status of critically acclaimed Russian films such as Leviathan (2014, dir. Andrey Zvyagintsev), which do not focus on these recommended themes, and the viability of making such films in future.
