The chairman of Russia’s Federation Council, Valentina Matviyenko, has proposed that Russia create a separate media sphere aimed at children.

“Today’s generation of children should also have its own media, its own space on the Internet and its own content on television,” said the head of the upper house of the Russian parliament.

According to Ms Matviyenko, children’s media outlets make the work of children’s organisations more effective. As an example of such successful use of media by children’s organisations she cited Soviet-era children’s magazines such as Pioneer, originally published by the Central Council of the All-Union Leninist Young Communist League and All-Union Pioneer Organisation.

Matviyenko also noted that “all organs of state power should think about further mechanisms to involve schoolchildren in the social-political life of the country.”
