Moscow’s Department of Culture has banned a play by independent theatre company Teatr.doc that was due to take place in the Moscow Hermitage Garden.

The play, entitled Pushkin and Money, was set to form part of the Festival of Theatre, which took place yesterday.

“Two days before the performance, the talks about which had been ongoing for three weeks, the festival organisers, to whom the Department gave the go-ahead, wrote to us: ‘They’ve censored it’,” Teatr.doc actress and director Anastasia Patlay wrote on Facebook.

According to Ms Patlay, Pushkin and Money is a family show and hardly contains any reference to politics. The play does, however, state that the poet was the victim of censorship.
