Soviet-era wallpaper with a lot of stories to tell

Interiors often hold traces of former residents, whether in the scuff marks or the objects left behind. Photographers Elena Amabili and Alessandro Calvaresi travelled the former countries of the Soviet Union to see what stories lie beneath the wallpaper and plaster of dilapidated buildings.

In contrast with typical photographs of crumbling modernist architecture or neglected nuclear bases — the empty interiors that make up their ongoing project Soviet Innerness seem full of life. The self-proclaimed “wallpaper hunters” were drawn to the bright abstract patterns emerging from the layers of history, each giving a glimpse into the past lives of the people who once lived there.
