Open City Documentary Festival opens tomorrow in London

A number of new east films will feature in London’s Open City Documentary Festival (OCDF), opening tomorrow.

Now in its sixth edition, OCDF shows a wide range of non-fiction films from around the world. This year’s festival will see screenings of 60 films, including 26 Feature UK premieres, in addition to short films, special events, a programme of industry masterclasses, talks, Q&As, industry panels, networking events and parties.

OCDF 2016 will host an array of films from the new east region, notably the Closing Night film, the UK premiere of Serbian-French co-production Depth Two (2016, dir. Ognjen Glavonić). A documentary thriller centering on an incident in which a truck containing 53 dead bodies plunged into the Danube, Depth Two takes viewers back to 1999 to examine, using spoken testimonies and powerful images, the atrocities of the Milošević regime.

“Depth Two is [...] a rebellion against the ongoing oblivion, an attempt to uncover, shed a light on and give a voice to these stories, intentionally buried in silence, and a film that speaks directly to the sensations, imagination and emotions of the viewer,” said director Ognjen Glavonić of his film, which will screen on 26 June.

Also screening at the festival on 25 June will be Mallory (2015) by Czech filmmaker Helena Třeštíková, who will additionally be running a masterclass, and Georgian-German co-production The Dazzling Light of Sunset (2016, dir. Salome Jashi) on 22 June.

The Open City Documentary Festival will run from 21 – 26 June at cinemas around London, including Picturehouse Central, Hackney Picturehouse and Crouch End Picturehouse, Regent Street Cinema, ICA, Bertha Dochouse and JW3. A full programme of events can be found here.
