Belarusian President signs culture code

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has signed into law the national Culture Code, bringing a new level of uniformity to cultural norms and regulations – the first such law in the post-Soviet space.

The code, which has already been passed by the House of Representatives and approved by the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus, streamlines the legal regulation of the cultural sphere. It allegedly aims to protect the country’s cultural legacy, promote cultural institutions and improve accessibility to culture, by setting out regulations for diverse fields within the sphere: preservation and development of cultural values, protection of historical and architectural heritage, libraries and museums, filmmaking, arts and crafts, amateur art groups, cultural events, and cultural incentives.

The new Culture Code will come into force six months after its official publication.
