Russia chooses Paradise for Oscars foreign-language film

20 September 2016

Russia’s Oscar committee has chosen Andrey Konchalovsky’s Paradise (2016) as its submission for the foreign-language film category at the 89th Academy Awards.

Paradise won the Silver Lion award for Best Director at this year’s Venice International Film Festival. The Russian-German co-production centres on the relationship between an inmate and an officer at a concentration camp during the Holocaust. Prominent film critic Alberto Barbera dubbed the film “genius” and “even better” than Konchalovsky’s previous work The Postman’s White Nights, which took home the Silver Lion in 2014.
