Mix the city: your Moscow soundscape

Create your own musical cityscape with Mix the City, a digital platform launched by the British Council that allows you to capture the sound of your Moscow.

Mix the City invites Muscovites to remix recordings of musicians playing in diverse locations around the city, set against iconic urban backdrops — voila, a veritable video tapestry of the Russian capital.

“At the heart of the project is the idea of a resource with which you can not only be creative, but also open yourself up to other cultures,” says Emmanuel Witzthum, creator of the online project, which first launched in Tel Aviv before expanding to the Balkans, Istanbul, Mannheim and now Moscow.

If you decide to get involved, you’ll be in good company. The 2 Bears, a British musical duo comprised of Joe Goddard (from electronic band Hot Chip) and Raf Rundell, are the curators of the Moscow platform. A rich array of performers are taking part, bringing everything from modern musical styles to traditional Russian folk music. They include Naadia, an indie-pop band fronted by Nadia Gritskevich; Olga Glazova, who plays the gusli, the oldest Russian multi-string plucked instrument; opera singer Mikhail Petrenko; and beat makers Kovsh Beats.

Each of the performers put together their contribution to the project at a different landmark. Mayakovskaya metro station was filled with the sound of opera, with Mikhail Petrenko choosing the iconic station as his Moscow soundspot, while Playtronica chose to perform on the steps of VDNKh.
