Pussy Riot premiere new videos

27 October 2016

Russian punk band Pussy Riot have released a new video on Viceland targeting Donald Trump’s dystopian vision of America’s future. The band’s core member Nadya Tolokonnikova appears in several roles throughout the video, titled Make America Great Again, acting out some of Trump’s infamous statements.

The video is directed by Jonas Åkerlund, a director known for Madonna’s Ray of Light, as well as his works with Beyonce, Britney Spears and Frank Ocean.

Earlier this week the band released another video that also refers to the American presidential candidate. Straight Outta Vagina, Tolokonnikova explained, is both a celebration of female sexuality and an answer to the leaked tapes in which Donald Trump is recorded bragging about using his fame to “get women”.

A third video, Organs, which was also released this week, comments on Russian politics. Tolokonnikova explained that the blood bath that she takes in the video is symbolic of life in Russia in the last few years, and also of the recent discussions of the abortion ban in the country. Organs and Straight Outta Vagina were produced by TV on the Radio’s Dave Sitek, known for his work with American and British indie bands.
