Szczecin’s National Museum wins World Building of the Year 2016

The ”Dialogue Centre Upheavals”, forming part of the National Museum in the Polish city of Szczecin, has been named World Building of the Year 2016 at the World Architecture Festival.

Designed by Katowice-based architect Robert Konieczny of KWK Promes, the sunken structure was built using pre-cast concrete alone, with its roof providing a huge public space. The subterranean nature of the building also ensures that it does not obstruct views of the adjacent Philharmonic Hall.

“This is a piece of topography as well as a museum,” the judging panel commented. “To go underground is to explore the memory and archaeology of the city, while above ground the public face of the building, including its undulating roof, and be interpreted and used in a variety of ways.”
