Russian animation studio Soyuzmultfilm has announced that it is working on an online children’s cinema together with former head of CTC Media, Yuliana Slashcheva.

Soyuzmultfilm General Director Gleb Davydov described the project as “an absolutely necessary thing”.

The date for the launch of the online cinema has yet to be announced.

“Animation is one of today’s fastest growing sectors. Even if we judge by the number of projects that are financed by the Cinema Fund, if there were two full-length projects the year before last, in 2016 there were four to five, and next year there will be at least ten,” Mr Davydov said of the state of children’s animation in Russia.

Soyuzmultfilm was the studio behind such well-known Soviet-era cartoons as Vinni-Pukh (Winnie-the-Pooh) and Cheburashka.
