More than half of Russians regret the dissolution of the Soviet Union, according to a survey by independent Russian sociological research organisation Levada.
While 56 per cent of respondents voiced sorrow about the fall of the USSR, only 28 per cent stated that they felt no regret, while 16 per cent omitted to give an answer.
Of those who rued the collapse of the Soviet Union, 53 percent were nostalgic for the unified economic system, while 43 percent commented that Russia had since lost some of its international influence as a world power.
The research was carried out last month, with 1,600 people surveyed in 134 towns, cities and villages across Russia.
