The 2016 World Travel Awards have named St Petersburg the World’s Leading Cultural City Destination.

At the awards ceremony, which took place in the Maldives last Friday, Andrey Mushkarev, Chairman of the St Petersburg Committee for Tourism Development, expressed his delight: “St Petersburg is now at the peak of its popularity. The city has won the most prestigious award in tourism.”

Also vying for the title were Beijing, London, New York, Paris, Rio de Janeiro, Rome, Sydney and Venice.

The award is especially timely for St Petersburg, given that the city is due to hold the World Travel Awards Europe Gala Ceremony in summer 2017.

This year marked the 23rd edition of World Travel Awards, recognised as one of the travel industry’s most prestigious awards programmes.
