As part of the Golden Ring, the Russian city of Kostroma is known for its rich history, but now the city government is hoping to put Kostroma on the map for another reason: being the first to launch meat cutlets into space.

On 2 January, as part of the city’s new year celebrations, one of Russia’s most popular food items will hopefully help Kostroma to break a world record.

“The experiment is unique, and representatives from the Guinness Book of Records will be coming to Kostroma,” said Tatiana Gachina, head of Kostroma’s Department of Culture.

According to Ms Gachina, the cutlet launch will attract a huge number of Kostroma residents and visitors from further afield.

No fear, the cutlets will remain fresh: they will reportedly become naturally frozen upon entering the stratosphere.
