Popcorn lovers, Russian director Andrei Konchalovsky doesn’t want you at his films

Russian filmmaker Andrei Konchalovsky caused a stir yesterday, telling reporters that he hopes to see the sale of popcorn banned at screenings of his films.

According to the TASS news agency, during a press conference for his new film Paradise – which, unrelated to any popcorn-hating activity has been selected as Russia’s entry for the 2017 Oscars – Konchalovsky claimed to divide film audiences into two groups: those who eat at the cinema, and those who don’t.

“Our films are for those who don’t eat popcorn,” he explained.

But will it stop at popcorn – where does Konchalovsky stand on nachos and candy?

Konchalovsky is known for such films as Tango & Cash (1989) and House of Fools (2002), as well as attempting to launch a patriotic Russian fast food chain together with his brother Nikita Mikhalkov.
