Budapest’s Shoes On The Danube Bank among most fascinating public sculptures

Leading architectural design magazine Architectural Digest has named the Shoes on the Danube Bank memorial in the Hungarian capital, Budapest, among the world’s “13 Most Fascinating Public Sculptures”.

Created by film director Can Togay together with sculptor Gyula Pauer in 2005, the memorial commemorates the people (many of them Hungarian Jews) killed by fascist Arrow Cross militiamen on the bank of the River Danube in Budapest during the Second World War. Those murdered were instructed to take off their shoes.
