20 July.2015, an exhibition by Lithuanian artist Deimantas Narkevičius, is now showing at east London’s Maureen Paley gallery.

Exploring the ramifications of physically rendering social and political ideals as sculptures or monuments, 20 July.2015 is made up of two films — 20 July 2015 and Once in the XX Century.

20 July 2015 centres on the removal of a number of Socialist Realist sculptures from the Green Bridge in central Vilnius over the course of a single day, while Once in the XX Century sees Narkevičius work with archival footage from Latvian National TV to examine the significance of the tearing down of a sculpture of Lenin in 1991.

Originally trained as a sculptor, Narkevičius is best known for his video art. He recently completed a 2016-17 solo exhibition at BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art in Gateshead, UK.

20 July.2015 will be on show at Maureen Paley in Bethnal Green, east London, until 5 March 2017. You can find out more here.
