Drama shot in Kosovo takes home BAFTA

Filmmaker Daniel Mulloy’s Home (2016), shot mostly in Kosovo, won the BAFTA (British Academy of Film and Television Arts) award for Best British Short Film on Sunday.

Centering on a family forced to flee the UK, the 20-minute short responds to the current refugee crisis and aims to bring the reality and gravity of the situation a little closer to home for British audiences.

“I then returned to the UK [after visiting Kosovo], billboards were up on streets that were overtly racist and our politicians were dehumanising those fleeing war zones, referring to them as ‘swarms’ and living in ‘jungles’. The film grew out of the fact that I wanted to respond,” the director stated in an interview with Dazed last year.

Largely filmed in the villages of Janjeva and Gracanica, Home stars Jack O’Connell and Holliday Grainger, along with well known Kosovo Albanian actress Arta Dobroshi.

Home wasn’t the only New East success of the night on Sunday. Oscar-winning feature film Son of Saul (2015) by Hungarian filmmaker László Nemes is still picking up awards, taking home the BAFTA for Best Film Not in the English Language.
