Hungarian short film wins Oscar

Hungarian director Kristóf Deák’s short Sing (Mindenki) took home the prize for Best Live-Action Short Film at the 89th Academy Awards on Sunday.

Set in Budapest in 1991, Sing follows a young girl who joins a choir at her new school, before discovering a dark secret about the choir leader.

Joining Sing in the list of nominees for Best Live-Action Short Film were Timecode (Spain), Silent Nights (Denmark), Enemies Within (France), and La Femme et le TGV (Switzerland).

A couple of other films from the New East also got a mention on the night — Blind Vaysha by Bulgarian-born Canadian director Theodore Ushev was nominated in the Best Animated Short Film category, while German film Toni Erdmann by Maren Ade, filmed largely in Romania, was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film.
