American television network HBO, home of hit fantasy series Game of Thrones, has announced a new mini-series on the Chernobyl disaster starring Mad Men actor Jared Harris.

A five-part series, Chernobyl will explore the aftermath of the 1986 nuclear accident, following the men and women charged with scrutinising the catastrophe. Harris will play Valery Legasov, the Soviet scientist appointed by the Kremlin to investigate the incident.

Chernobyl will mark the first co-production between HBO and Sky Television, with filming expected to begin in Lithuania in spring 2018.

“From the moment Craig Mazin pitched us the story, we were convinced that this all-too-true tale of horror and redemption needed to be told,” said Kary Antholis, president of HBO Miniseries and Cinemax Programming, quoted by Variety.
