Meet the Moscow-based illustrator Katya Dorokhina

31 August 2017

Moscow-based illustrator Katya Dorokhina is turning heads in the arts world with her unique aesthetic that combines “nighttime palettes and neon colours”.

In an interview with It’s Nice That, Dorokhina reveals: “I like contrast, bright neon colours, glitchy effects… I try to keep shapes simple but compensate with colour and details – I’m obsessed with details and can spend a lot of time on tiny little pieces. In my opinion they create a mood for the whole piece.”

Her most recent work for Wonderzine, addresses the issue of sexual harassment within the family. “Working with such difficult material is not easy, but I think it’s important to discuss these problems, share the experience and support the heroins of the articles,” she explains.

Katya sketches compositions before digitally editing them with Photoshop allowing her to play and experiment with texture, light and colour. “Analysing my past work I can say my visual language has its roots in my childhood. I just have this nostalgic feeling of pop culture in the 90s,” she adds.

Her impressive resume includes commissions for Interview Magazine, Esquire Russia as well as fashioned-themes gifs for The Blueprint and illustrations for women’s magazine Wonderzine. Though her biggest break came when she designed a panel comic for H&M’s Kenzo collection, telling “a noir story about the love, rebellion and freedom of art.” The illustrator added: “I was inspired by the bright, floral patterns, wild colours and cool ambassadors of the collection.”
