Point of view: one night in Zebra Katz’s world

Since releasing his track Ima Read, Zebra Katz has taken the queer rap scene by storm. His razor-sharp lyrics and rumbling baritone have made the Brooklyn-based performance artist one of the most interesting rappers of recent years. When The Calvert Journal heard that Zebra Katz would be performing at Bushmills live in St Petersburg’s now-defunct creative space, Chetvert, we handed him a disposable camera for our Point of View series. As the camera passes through different hands, we see the man himself working the crowd, rapping and dancing with partygoers on stage, including his co-star for the evening, US DJ Conrad Carlson, aka Dirtyfinger. Another curious shot sees Zebra Katz — real name Ojay Morgan — lying down with various paraphernalia by his side: his Doc Marten boots, sunglasses, two caps, a ski mask and more. As the night went on, Zebra Katz moved to Mishka Bar, one of St Petersburg’s liveliest drinking dens. Needless to say, the party followed.
