Close up: in Christina Abdeeva’s cinematic visions, women always play the lead role

Currently based in Paris, 24-year-old Christina Abdeeva has shot for Russian Vogue, Port and Esquire, developing a multilayered storytelling style always featuring a female protagonist. The tropes she uses within her fashion photography belong to the grand world of classic cinematography, evoking the black and white stillness of Last Year in Marienbad or Bergman masterpieces such as Wild Strawberries. Abdeeva follows her heroines through breathtaking settings — forests, night streets and monumental buildings — restlessly chasing the dramatic composition of film stills. Her women are both fragile and empowered, dreamy and self-aware, the source and the centre of the story.
