Immerse yourself in the free-flowing world of Katya Yonder’s 70s-inspired mixtape

21 July 2020

Russian artist Katya Yonder has dropped a new mixtape celebrating the diverse musical influences of her Soviet childhood.

Born in the Russian city of Yekaterinburg, Yonder — otherwise known as Katya Prokina — grew up with her parent’s expansive record collection, featuring avant-garde sounds, electronic music pioneers, classic Soviet composers, and 70s and 80s pop.

Her latest mixtape, 055, made for Berlin-based label Métron Records, is an immersive 45-minute ode to ambient music, full of references to her earliest influences. Both soothing and entrancing, the mixtape combines atmospheric sounds with a hypnotic electronic base. The artist has previously released a trio of cassettes for St Petersburg-based label Floe, and is currently working on a full-length ambient album.
