A virtual tour of Russian contemporary art with Moscow’s Garage Triennial

Moscow’s Garage Museum is hosting the second edition of its Triennial of Russian Contemporary Art.

The show features more than 60 artists and artworks. The triennial is called “A Beautiful Night For All The People” after the title of a book written by Russian mathematician and philosopher Roman Mikhailov in a fictional, encoded language.

Curators Valentin Diaconov and Anastasia Mityushina say this edition was inspired by British sociologist John Law’s After Method: Mess in Social Science Research. The book, published in 2004, argues that in today’s divided and multicultural world, rigid models of classification need to be replaced by methods that bring together diverse social classes, different political groups, and subcultures.

Taking this approach, participants of the 2017 edition were invited to select artists for this year, under the conditions that their relationship would be explicitly stated in the catalogue, and that the recommender would in some way help the artist they chose in making the project for the Triennial.

Some of the highlights of the preview include Asya Marakulina’s squishy sculptures, Yury Vasilyev’s Soviet bus installation, and Zina Isupova’s socially charged, yet brightly coloured paintings.
