An Instagram account places art history’s most famous works in 2020 Bucharest

“What would be the most Romanian thing to pair with this artwork?” This is the question that inspires the collages on the Instagram account @latifundiar.

Working in electronic recycling, @latifundiar makes these collages as a hobby. Starting off with more simple photoshopping, where he would only change a painting on a wall to a photo of tower blocks, the curator moved on to more complex intertwininsg of artworks and snippets of everyday Romanian realities: key Bucharest buildings, ubiquitous supermarkets, the beloved national staple tradition of grilling sausages (‘mici’) anywhere and everywhere. “I think this is what has caught the public eye, the low-budget ‘Romanianness’ of this account,” he told The Calvert Journal.

Socialist modernist architecture fans will have plenty of works to take delight in.

While the visual contrasts these collages rely on often spark laughter, they also sometimes include painful reflections on the inequality defining Romania in 2020.
