Bernie Sanders might not have asked to become a meme icon a second time, but one viral photograph of him taken at Joe Biden’s inauguration on 20 January — and looking quite unenthused at witnessing the event — has sealed his fate.

The internet, meanwhile, has fallen in love with his mittens! As might be expected, the memes made in response have been hilarious and unpredictable: Bernie looks unfazed sitting opposite Marina Abramovic as part of her performance The Artist is Present at MoMA museum; nor does he seem too chuffed about joining Vladimir Putin for an icy dip during Epiphany celebrations. Next time you’re at the Hermitage or walk past a shashlik party in your neighbourhood, you might want to check for Bernie slumped on his chair.

One enthusiast has even created a website that lets you place Bernie anywhere in the world, using Google Street View. Just pick your place here and away-he-goes.
