Russian diplomats in Australia have dropped their own music video for a self-penned cover track of a US rock classic.
Tweeted via the Russian Embassy Australia account, “House of the Russian Emb” is a suit-clad homage to The Animals’ “The House of the Rising Sun”. Complete with its own music video, filmed on the grounds (and rooftop) of the Russian Embassy in Canberra, the musical ode was released to celebrate Russian Diplomats’ Day on 10 February. The special occasion was also marked by a friendly football match against the city’s Turkish embassy.
As well as providing guitar and keyboard accompaniment, embassy rockers wrote their own original lyrics for the tribute, including, “My mother is my country / She sewed my new blue suit / My father is the MFA [Ministry of Foreign Affairs] / Down in Old Arbat”.
Other, less-than humble lyrics also include, “It [the embassy] has been the home for many smart ones / And God, I am among them”.
Unfortunately the video is yet to hit the heady heights of viral diplomatic stardom, with just over 1,000 views at the time of writing.
The drop comes hot on the heels of a similar musical offering from the US embassy in Vietnam.
In a heartening reminder that neither geopolitical divides nor musical genre should be a barrier to online infamy, US Ambassador Daniel Kritenbrink released a Facebook rap track collaborating with local MC Wowy to celebrate Lunar New Year.
“Hi, I’m Dan, I’m from Nebraska. I’m not a big city boy,” say the lyrics. “Then three years ago I moved to Hanoi.”
