This may come as a surprise to you, but Russian officialdom has a healthy appetite for prohibition and prosecution, especially when it comes to culture. Barely a week goes by without a new court case piece of legislation making headlines across the world. Just last week a fine was slapped on Lady Gaga’s Russian concert promoters for committing Russia’s crime du jour “promoting non-traditional sexual relations”.
As more and more people and products get put on Russia’s official blacklist, it becomes hard to keep track of what’s allowed and what’s not. (Particularly as, when the media hype dies down, a lot of high-profile cases are quietly dismissed.)
