A controversial Russian TV actor, who last year said that he would “put all the gays alive into an oven”, has urged President Vladimir Putin to criminalise sodomy. Writing on his blog yesterday, Ivan Okhlobystin, the star of Interns, Russia’s version of US sitcom Scrubs, said that failure to do so would give “sodomites…a constitutional opportunity to defile the young generation”.

Okhlobystin also praised Putin for introducing the ban on “gay propaganda” last year, but said the law was insufficient. The former Orthodox Christian priest denounced homosexuality at a talk in the Siberian city of Novosibirsk in December last year. “I would put all the gays alive into an oven,” he said. “This is Sodom and Gomorrah. As a religious person, I cannot be indifferent about it because it is a real threat to my children.”
