Russian avant-garde exhibition opens in New York

A new exhibition of masterpieces from the Russian Avant-garde in New York will feature artworks from the likes of Wassily Kandinsky, Nikolai Suetin and Natalia Goncharova, with many making their western debut. From Primitivism to Propaganda at the National Arts Club is the first public display of a private art collection featuring paintings, watercolours, costume design and propaganda posters that chart Russian art in the first three decades of the 20th century.

Curator of the exhibition Matthew Drutt said: “This exhibition offers a selective and refreshing look at Russia’s most intensely fertile period of creativity before, during, and after the October Revolution.” Alongside the Avant-Garde greats will be a selection of propaganda posters by Ukrainian-born Rosalia Rabinovich including her poster designs for the 1937 Soviet Pavilion at the Paris International Exhibition for which the artist became known.

The exhibition will run until 27 June.
