The Mixtape 14: Slava Balasanov

This month's mixtape, compiled by producer and visual artist Slava Balasanov, is a smorgasbord of Russian and Asian sounds plucked from VK (Russia’s alternative to Facebook). Adopted New Yorker Balasanov turned to the social network in order to find out more about music trends in the former USSR republics. "It's such a vast territory and so rich culturally, yet is not really known or appreciated inside Russia, let alone beyond that." Balasanov told The Calvert Journal. "These tracks are just the very tip of the iceberg — probably the most common pop. I also added some hard bass, pop songstress Nyusha and a track by my friend's OL to round it out. The mood of the mix is distinctly Russian with some extra Kavkaz (Caucasian) sentimentality."
