Russian policemen are set to teach citizens how to take selfies safely, after a slew of fatal or near-fatal selfie-related incidents.

On Tuesday, representatives of the Russian Interior Ministry will hold, together with regional social and media organisations, a videoconference on the subject of selfie safety, in order to inform local law enforcers on the subject.

A ministry official stated that the ministry is concerned by the growing number of injuries happening “during attempts to take a unique selfie”.

Earlier this month a young woman fell from a bridge when trying to take a selfie next to the Moscow International Business Centre. The cause of her fall appears to have been a broken fence, which she leaned on when taking the photo. This incident follows the hospitalisation of two girls in the Rostov region in June, who were electrocuted after attempting to take a selfie on the tanker carriage of a train.

After a string of similar incidents, For Safety, a social organisation, has requested that the Ministry for Education bring professional psychologists and photographers to conduct lessons on selfie safety in schools.
